Speaker 2:

Hello Magical Human and welcome back to Madison Mindset the podcast. This is episode 4 in our chakra series, Heart Chakra. This series was originally recorded on Held, the podcast which I co-host with my beautiful friend Molly. All the details for that podcast and to go and check out Molly are below in the show notes. If you would like to dive a little bit deeper into heart chakra and you'd like to go through a practice with me, find me on Patreon the link is below and we're going to go through a beautiful heart chakra session together. Enjoy the episode.

Speaker 1:

Hello everyone, welcome back to another episode of Held. We have our heart chakra episode today, but I just told Maddie to record because I was thinking about something. We actually recorded an episode last night. I think it's going to come after this one, though it's going to be all muddled up, but who cares, it's fine. But basically Maddie was sharing how, yeah, she's just been feeling a little bit overwhelmed, would you say. Maddie, You've been pulled in lots of different directions, there's lots of things that you want to be doing and it's just like a little bit overwhelming and can feel quite heavy at times. And because we recorded right before bed, I was thinking about you while I was falling asleep and I just kept thinking, oh, I've got to ask Maddie that, I've got to ask her that. And what came up for me was that A and we did discuss this in the episode was that you are in your luteal phase, so it can feel heavier, obviously, at that time.

Speaker 1:

But I was wondering have you been living in sync with your cycles? Have you actually been mindful of? Hey, I'm in follicular phase now. This is a really great time for me to actually start something new plant the seeds. Ovulation is a great time to grow things. Luteal is the time to pull back and drop the rope and menstrual is a time just to go inwards and sort of check, as well as looking at what can you learn from this current season in autumn? For me, when I think about autumn, I'm like okay, the trees are like trees, the leaves are dying, they're falling off. So that's an invitation to think about. Okay, what are the things that I can let fall away? And I just thought maybe it was a beautiful reminder and a time for you to be like am I actually living cyclically right now or lately?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I love that Definitely with the autumn, like that's why I was leaning more towards, like maybe there's things I need to let go of, like definitely feeling that and I am in luteal, which is autumn anyway- so, yeah, I'm definitely, definitely aware of that and probably next week, week after, will be a different ball game altogether.

Speaker 2:

But I guess, if I had to answer the question, am I living in alignment with my cycle? No, because I've had, I've had, you know, ovulation times where I've been so moody and inward and I've had periods where I'm like let's go, like it's so, like you just can't really, I just can't predict like how I'm going to feel and each cycle is so different. And there's been times where I'm like, you know, I really want to live in alignment with my cycle and you'll remember, like last year, luteal phase was a time of action for me, like I felt so good in luteal phase.

Speaker 2:

It's kind of moved around a bit now but I was like why would I sit down and, you know, act in alignment with my cycle when everything in me is like let's go, you know? So? No, because I'm like I do respect there's different seasons in life, but I don't know if anyone else experiences this, but mine is not as clear cut as bleed. You should go inward ovulation. You're going to be bouncing off the walls. Mine is so all over the place and I'm sure there's other women like that as well. But yeah, so it answers your question.

Speaker 1:

your question, no, but I have been acknowledging autumn and the letting go and things like that yeah, and I like, I don't think it is like a one-size-fits-all, but I just think it's like tuning back into your body and just looking maybe a bit more closely because, like you said last year, you knew that luteal time was the time for you to always like do, get, get shit done. But it's obvious that there's been a change. So where is there a level of consistency now? And as women, yes, our hormones change every day. But I don't know, I think, sometimes, looking at it more closely and being like, okay, well, is there a pattern here that then I can draw off?

Speaker 1:

And you know, yes, there's like the broader approach of the seasons, but it's like, well, how can I pick and choose and take little parts of each into my life? Or, yeah, because I think, like, for me, I definitely have noticed that my energy has shifted in luteal and I can do a bit more than what I used to. But it's all about like I'm being aware and I'm making sure that I don't know with each, I don't know just each day I am really checking in with my energy levels and just, yeah, seeing how I feel. But I think, yes, sometimes it's hard because it seems like it's a one size fits all approach, but it's like taking that information and finding how it can work for you as your seasons shift too.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, definitely. I think it's definitely something I could look into, but I don't know. To be honest, now I'm just not feeling called to do that. I feel like there's something else I need to sink in with. Like my, my cycle has felt like a relaxed dream. It just kind of goes on in what it's doing. The bleed comes very naturally and without any massive issue.

Speaker 2:

And it just kind of flows, very much, just flowing in the background. I think I don't know, I think it's something else. You know that I'm not, I don't know. I'm still like, as I said, like last night or next episode, everybody's listening yes, like it's kind of like I can't quite understand what the lesson is yet, yeah, but but it's not landed yet, so I will let you know when I know, but I've got no idea, so I think I'll just I'll figure it out. It'll hit me on the head, probably literally.

Speaker 1:

Yep, yep For sure. And it's probably one of those things that it's like now's not the time to find a solution, because you know when you're in the thick of something, and it's like, don't find the solution in the thick of it, right, you find it when at the time's right. But anyway, I thought I would share that with you because I was thinking about you as I was falling asleep. Oh did you dream about me yes, darling, yeah.

Speaker 2:

So yeah, I think it's a beautiful thought and it's definitely something I'll like take into account and go. It could be this, it could be that. But yeah, I feel like you know, when you throw a ball and there's a state like straight up and there's like a stage where it's not going up and not going down, it's just kind of in the air. Yeah, I feel like I've been thrown and I'm just in the air and I don't know where it's going to land or what's going to happen. I'm just kind of in the air. So anything I try and do to fix it right now just makes me angrier. So instead I'm like I just got to wait until this lands and see what happens and then I'll figure it out. So I'm just going to dance in the mess until then. But thankfully it's a long weekend and I can just switch off and just yeah that'll be good.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, beautiful, beautiful. I also love our different approach as well. Like, I guess. Sometimes I'm like, yep, I'm going to wait and see, but then other times I'm like I'm going to grab the fucking ball out of the air and I'm going to bring it back to myself and I'm going to be like no bitch, guess that ball belongs over there, oh my God. Anyway, before we get into heart chakra, I'll do my quick cycle check-in lesson and blessing. I'm on day 13, feeling good, as you can tell by my energy, she's glowing. My current lesson is pick up the vibes. In the morning, like at the moment, I've been listening to music and dancing and that's probably, you know, the phase that I'm in. My energy is like that, but I'm just like. Music is such a great way to like switch your energy and like get into a good vibe, so I've been loving that. So that's a lesson, but it's also a blessing, so I'm just going to tile that in in one beautiful love it.

Speaker 2:

Okay. I'm on day 29 and my cycle has varied quite a bit by like three or four days the last few months. So now I'm looking at it and I'm like today, tomorrow, next week, I'm not sure. So in that kind of like, do I need period underpants today?

Speaker 1:

phase or what do I need to do.

Speaker 2:

Probably drag them around in my back pocket yeah for sure. Yeah, my lesson probably like what I was just saying before is just like last night I was a bit heavy, but today I'm like you know what. So it's fucking in the air. You know what. Things are just a bit weird. That's fine, you know it's, it's part of it. Just wait and see what happens and I bet your blade.

Speaker 1:

Your blade is gonna bring some beautiful things.

Speaker 2:

I reckon yeah I think it will as well. I think it'll land in that. Anyway, my blessing probably that it's a shorter week. I think a longer, a long normal week would have been challenging this week. So I'm very grateful that you know the hard, harder energies and things kind of aligned with a long weekend. I appreciate that and I'm going to use that to my best advantage.

Speaker 1:

And happy Easter everyone, because this will come out on Easter. Yeah, if we're doing it that way, I'm pretty sure we are. Yeah, happy Easter. Anyway, let's get into the heart chakra after a couple of technical difficulties. Okay, okay.

Speaker 2:

Fire away. All right, I want to have it noted that I'm wearing green for heart chakra and you're in your green room. I'm in my green room, exactly. Okay, everyone, as I've said for the past three nope two episodes, go back and listen to the last three Before, yeah, before you listen to this one, unless you're, like, really specifically interested in heart chakra for whatever reason, do all of them, listen to the whole stack of them, because that's going to really help and provide some context, because, like I explained in the beginning of this series, chakras are like building blocks and they all interact with and affect each other. If the bottom chakra is unbalanced, then the rest of them are pretty much out, so it very much matters where you're sitting below heart chakra. Okay, well, let's begin.

Speaker 2:

So, heart chakra is often named a bridge, a bridge that connects the lower chakras, which are all about the physical body, to the higher chakras, which are all about the spiritual body. Okay, so the heart is a hybrid of both. It is a spiritual, physical aspect, okay, and it is also the first time that we start to think about others, okay. So for the first three chakras, it's very much about am I safe? How am I feeling? Where's my identity, where's my ego? It's all very much about your body and where you are with it. Heart chakra starts to welcome the effects of other people. Okay, so, in heart chakra, which is named Anahata in Sanskrit, and it's really beautiful, because if you translate that, it often translates to unhurt or infinite, which is really beautiful. So the infinite chakra, or, you know, unbound, unhurt chakra, so the heart chakra is green because it's spinning a bit faster than the solar plexus, given the rainbow right. The heart chakra sits right in the center of your chest and it's spinning horizontally. Okay, so picture a plate spinning around in a circle.

Speaker 2:

When you look and work with heart chakra, what we're looking at is obviously love, compassion, empathy, feeling, you know, unconditional love, in particular self-love, all of it. Love is the highest frequency that there is in the world and that's why love tends to always come out on top. You know, like people are drawn to love, they're drawn to love. So the heart literally has an emotional center on its own. Okay, so in sacral we were looking at emotional body water, very connected with the emotions. But the heart starts to relate emotions to others, you know. So sacral chakra is more about the emotions in your body and dealing with those.

Speaker 2:

Heart chakra is about where those emotions came from, why we're feeling this particular emotion and it really hits. You know that's what makes emotions hit so hard, because if you just had, you know, grief but no context, you know it's actually not that bad. You can work with grief, you know. You can let it flow through the body, just like you would in sacral chakra. That's why you work with that area, with stuck emotions, but the heart gives it the context. You're feeling grief because you lost this person or that. You know, and that is what makes it so hard to release these emotions. Because you've got the context, you've got the why, you've got the how it actually happened.

Speaker 2:

So there has actually been scientific evidence that has shown that the heart does feel, which is really interesting, you know. So the heart, like you know when people say, like, what does your heart say about making a decision, when you would usually align making a decision with your brain, with your mind, you know, often we refer to what does your heart say? You know, my heart's telling me to go here, my heart's telling me to go there. Why do we do that when the heart typically, logically, doesn't have anything to do with your decisions, because the heart is the feeler. You know, this is why people literally die of a broken heart. You know, often an old couple one of them will die and the next one will die very soon after. If people literally die of a broken heart, why do you think people have heart attacks and all kinds of things? When they're under great stress? Because their heart just can't take it anymore when they go. So the heart is so connected to your emotions.

Speaker 2:

And something in Chinese medicine which is really cool is they look at the king's bodyguard. Okay, now, this is a nickname given by the Chinese medicine practitioners to the pericardium. The pericardium, for those of you who don't know, is a big sack around your heart. It is a protective sack that is holding the heart and basically, when people have, you know, heart surgery and stuff, very often it's the pericardium that is actually getting the attention. You know, because it's it's job, which kind of you know, you kind of hear it through its nickname.

Speaker 2:

You know, the King's bodyguard, the King being the heart. Okay, literally, what it's doing is trying to protect the heart from everything that it's feeling and everything that's happening in the outside world. So when you get tense in your chest and you're stressed and your chest constricts. The king's bodyguard is literally trying to stop that pressure from touching the heart. You know it's literally trying so hard to protect the heart at all costs because obviously the heart it's everything. You know the heart stops, that's it. So it. You know it's so important that it has its own bodyguard team.

Speaker 2:

Okay, so, under high stress, under too much emotion, for too long, you know, not allowing things to move, people have heart attacks, people die of heartbreak. You feel it in your heart and your heart literally has the ability of making decisions through the emotional lens. So your head is going to make the logical decisions, the heart is going to make the emotional pull, which is why some people are like, oh, my head says I should do this, but my heart says I should do that. Like what do I do? You know we say this instinctively.

Speaker 2:

Yeah Well it's also referred to as the gut decision. The gut has actually been named the first brain, not the second brain, so it used to be the second brain. Now it's the first. Okay, so if you were to line all these brains up, it would be gut brain, right? Or is it brain heart?

Speaker 1:

anyway, it's not what you would expect it to be yeah, okay, yes, molly, does the intuition lie in the heart chakra?

Speaker 2:

no, it lies in third eye.

Speaker 1:

Oh, okay, so then, yeah, you can see how complicated it is.

Speaker 2:

Okay, so this is like when we were talking about stuff last night which everyone listening. You will hear about next week.

Speaker 1:

Yes.

Speaker 2:

When you yeah, when I'm thinking about that, I've got a gut feeling about it which is literally down in your guts. You feel like sick or like a pull or something there. You've got a heart feeling about it which is often giving you some emotional context, like I'm feeling overwhelmed and, you know, sad and everything, because I can't figure out what I'm doing and it's like making me frustrated. And I've got all this context about it. I've got my logical brain that's like okay, just wake up in the morning and write everything down that you want to do and just simply do it or we can cross things off the list and then the heart goes no, I love all those things, you can't take those things off me.

Speaker 2:

And then my intuition is like we're going to find out. You just have to wait for a little bit and the answers will come.

Speaker 1:

The answers are not here, right?

Speaker 2:

now. So you literally end up with the gut, the head, the heart, the intuition, all like swarming and then you have the opinions of other people, which is why, like when you want to talk to someone you know, unless it's a professional, you have to be mindful that if you talk to 10 different friends, every family member, all of them, are going to have different opinions based on what you're saying.

Speaker 1:

So then you end up with opinions everywhere and then your own stuff everywhere.

Speaker 1:

So you want to be careful? Yeah, that's something I definitely say to friends and people. I say just be careful Sometimes, when you have an issue like you just want to pick and choose who you share it with and not share it with too many people, because then you get all their opinions and, yeah, it can just become a bit messy, right? And interestingly, I'm just hearing you talk about the heart chakra and I'm like I'm just hearing you talk about the heart chakra and I'm like so, for someone who I'm very up in my head, quite often I, instead of feeling in the heart chakra, I go up in my head, which I'm excited to move up to those upper chakras. But in order for me to get back into my heart, I need to get down to my root first and like start with those practices.

Speaker 2:

Work the way up.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, which is just becoming really clear to me and making more sense as to why, when I'm really up in my head, in order to come back from thinking into feeling, it helps to like get my feet on the ground, get into my body, all those sorts of things. So really, really powerful. I love this, yeah yeah, it's huge.

Speaker 2:

and you know your relationships are stored in the heart chakra. You know, years and years ago I was going through a heartbreak from whatever thing and I ended up writing this poem about it. And I can't remember what the poem, like, said exactly and I can't remember which journal it's in I've got an abundance of old journals but I remember the main idea was like I felt like I'd gotten a download about what the heart does. Because the heart it just when you logically are like this is not the right partner for me, it's not going to work. Sometimes your heart doesn't care about that stuff. It's attached, it like it loves this person. You know so, even though you're like, logically this isn't right, I have to let it go, otherwise it's attached, it like it loves this person.

Speaker 2:

You know so, even though you're like, logically this isn't right, I have to let it go, otherwise it's not going to end well. So you do that. It breaks your heart. You know it's still like it doesn't matter what happens or who who does what, or you know what you have to do to make sure that you are doing the right thing by you in this life. The heart is storing all of that love, all of those connections, all of those relationships. It's storing it and it keeps it like locked up, tight, you know, like. These are the people that I love and that's why people have the ability to break your heart over and over again, because you've got them stored there.

Speaker 1:

You've given them a hierarchy place basically.

Speaker 2:

So that is something that you need to work with with your heart, because if someone needs to be let go of, you have to understand that the heart will probably always have a special spot for them, which is why you know it's probably best to get rid of exes out of your you know life, you know, and not see them all the time, because it brings up stuff with your heart. You know. So it's you're actually protecting your heart when you do that. So you know we're also looking at you, know all the relationships you had as a child. You know your family, your, your friends, all of that. They have a special place and a lot of that pain. If someone's called you caused you some kind of pain, it'll be there and it's very hard to just let that go. So if you have an unbalanced heart chakra, some of the symptoms can be feeling unworthy, unable to trust, poor circulation, high or low blood pressure, stiffness in the chest and shoulders, and then, of course, you know trouble in relationships, not able to hold a relationship or not being able to let go. And, yeah, like heart palpitations can be a sign, like I get heart palpitations when I'm highly anxious. So I know that I'm putting so much pressure on you know that whole space that it just starts to affect how the heart is functioning. So, yeah, but if you are in a balanced heart chakra space, you're able to actually love unconditionally, you can forgive, you have compassion and you hold healthy relationships.

Speaker 2:

Okay, so this is a lot of the self-work I've done. I can actually see it when I look back on all of my romantic relationships and even friendships. You know, although I've had a lot more romantic relationships and friendships have been very low key on the friends, but I can literally see it. How I acted when I was young and what I said versus you know, when I started doing this work, when I started getting a little bit braver and more, you know in myself, love and trusting myself and being able to forgive and let things go. You know you start to see the change in how you act. And I know that the work I've done on the heart chakra space is massively affecting my current relationship because you know, when I've done something wrong or something that upset my partner, I'm able to forgive myself, I'm able to hear him with compassion, without getting angry about it and defensive, right, whereas I was never able to do that before. So there is a lot of work here and if you allow your heart to build up all these emotions and to hold onto all this stuff and all this stress and anger, that you're putting yourself in a prime position for any kind of blood pressure trouble, heart attacks, stroke, all that kind of thing.

Speaker 2:

Okay, so yeah, it's, it's affecting more than you know. You've got to work with this space big time and yeah, it's tricky, it's really tricky. You know all kinds of. You can end up with grief, hatred. You know, um, you know attachment styles. You know that really like clingy attachment style, like just unhealthy, toxic behaviors it all comes from. No one's trying to be a bad person, it's just that their heart is just so strong. We've all felt the pull of the heart before. It's incredibly difficult to ignore.

Speaker 2:

So doing heart chakra work is very important and some people say that the heart chakra is the only chakra you need to work on. Reason being is because if you can get that right, if you can nail unconditional love, compassion, that peace in the heart center, everything else just falls into place. The heart is the exception of this rule. Go to the bottom, come up, because the heart literally governs love and there is nothing higher than love. If you can nail unconditional love, forgiveness, compassion and peace in your heart space and you've let go of stuff, what else is there, you've nailed it right, because if you nail that, then your ego is going to settle into someone who can forgive, who can be calm and peaceful. Your sacral chakra that stores all of these emotions is going to be less heavy with stuff that you're holding onto and it's going to make you unclench your bottom. So it's going to relax root chakra and you're going to feel grounded and safe in all of your decisions and all of your feelings. It's going to affect everything. So some people and there are some traditions who literally only look at the heart chakra and focus on that Wow, you know. So that's how important this is.

Speaker 2:

Okay, and quickly, how to balance an open heart chakra, heart chakra opening poses in yoga. So we're talking all things chest openers, wheel pose, bridge pose, bow pose, and even just laying back over some pillows with the arms open and the chest wide Beautiful thing to do, even just like doing some cat cows, is lovely. Walking in nature, being amongst that green energy you know nature very much is embodying unconditional love and compassion and empathy and all those things. So be with that green and enjoy it, and that's going to help your root chakra anyway. You can do, you know, meditations with the hands on the heart and you can even chant the heart chakra's mantra, which is yum, so Y-A-M, yum, and you can just let it radiate there.

Speaker 2:

Any kind of tapping and moving this energy. As I said, you've got that pericardium, the king's bodyguard, right there. It's holding off some tension. It's trying to keep all your tension away from the heart. It's like, oh God, give me a break. You know, relax. Your shoulders Also breath work, because the breathing, your lungs massage this whole chest area from the inside out. So when you take deep breaths and relaxing breaths, you're also massaging the heart space and the pericardium and you can release a lot of this tension.

Speaker 2:

Any kind of like lung massage or tapping. You know tapping the side of the lungs or rubbing the rib cage. You know rubbing the sternum massage, shoulder massages, things like that, yeah, yeah, and then obviously journaling helps, but seriously working on your ability to forgive. Do not allow someone to sit in your heart space with hatred. You know how people say that love turns into hate so easily. Yeah, it's a fine line. Yeah, that's what's happened. You loved them. They broke your heart in whatever way, and your heart went hate, and hate is just as strong as love, and it will not affect them for very long. It's going to affect you.

Speaker 2:

It's like having poison in your heart. So you have to learn forgiveness, unconditional love, genuine care for others, and for me, yoga really helped. The philosophy in yoga, all kinds of mindset work, but working on caring for others and seeing the best in people instead of all the flaws, it can really help.

Speaker 1:

So there you go.

Speaker 2:

That's a rundown on heart chakra.

Speaker 1:

I love that. It can really help. So there you go. That's a rundown on heart chakra. I love that and I think that's one thing ever since I met you is what I've always said about you is like you just have this unconditional love for people and I just admire it so much. You can really tell for sure that you've done so much work on the heart chakra. And yeah, the other thing that was coming up for me while you're talking about those ways to sort of balance it out is definitely looking into inner child healing, working with that inner child and working on things that you may need to forgive from the past. You know, whether it be with your parents or carers or you know any sort of family as you've been growing up, and just inviting feeling into the body as well. Just inviting feeling into the body as well.

Speaker 1:

Sometimes we have gone so long avoiding feeling that when we do start feeling, it can feel like the floodgates are being opened and we're just like holy shit.

Speaker 1:

But this is the saying of feel to heal and that's why it's so powerful.

Speaker 1:

So sometimes if you're someone who has built up a lot of walls and whatnot around your heart, it can be very hard to feel into it, but on the other side of that feeling is so much healing and so much more love. So I think, definitely if you're someone who is struggling a lot with the heart chakra, it is good to get help from an outside source. It's good to get a coach or you know, sometimes people like you know talk therapy and stuff like that, but I think it's if it's something that you're really struggling with, it can help to have that support. Whether it be listening to more podcasts, going to a yoga class, doing a breathwork session, you know, finding a coach, whatever. I think it can be really, really helpful to have that guidance, especially if you're someone like me who for so long you avoided feeling and you just went up in here. It can be a little bit overwhelming, I guess, when you start to feel again. So beautiful space for so much growth though, so good.

Speaker 2:

So good, yeah, I think it's. Oh, it's definitely the favorite of the day. I was going to say it's my favorite chakra, but it's the favorite of the day I was going to say it's my favorite chakra, but it's the favorite of the day we'll say because I love them all.

Speaker 1:

I love that. Thank you so much, maddie. I will run through our journal prompts for the heart chakra. So again, we've got three themes. We've got giving and receiving love. How comfortable do I feel giving and receiving love, not just in words but in presence and action? Are there parts of me that resist love and where might that resistance come from? What would it feel like to soften into love more fully?

Speaker 1:

Compassion and forgiveness when in my life am I being called to offer more compassion to myself or to someone else? Called to offer more compassion to myself or to someone else? Are there any old hurts that I'm holding on to? What might begin to shift if I choose to forgive and release? And then there's heart-centered boundaries. Do I honor my own emotional needs as much as I honor the needs of others? Where might I be over giving or holding back? How can I create boundaries that protect my heart while still keeping it open? Wow, there's just so many things here that I can just like, resonate with so much, a lot of the work that I've been doing, so, so beautiful. So we'll pop those down in the show notes below. And happy heart chakra everyone.

Speaker 2:
